Description

Rifaximin works by inhibiting bacteria from making proteins they need to grow and survive. This causes the bacteria to die or lose their ability to function. It is not effective against viruses, such as the cold or flu. It is also not useful against sexually transmitted infections or other types of bacterial infections.

Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a significant contributing factor in the progression of chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis.
